The most notorious federal prison in American history. Held 1,576 prisoners over 29 years. Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly were inmates. No prisoner ever escaped and been confirmed alive. 36 men attempted escape in 14 separate attempts. The water around the island is 12C and has strong currents. Closed in 1963 due to high operating costs.
