The tallest predominantly stone structure in the world. The color changes about a third up due to a construction pause during the Civil War. Originally planned with a circular colonnade at the base. An earthquake in 2011 caused cracks that took 3 years to repair. Has 897 steps but visitors use the elevator. The aluminum cap was the largest piece of aluminum ever cast at the time.
